Grabbed by the Ghoulies was one of–if not the worst selling games in Rare’s massive catalog of over one hundred titles released to date. It’s a sad fact, but it’s true. I thought GBTG was a really awesome game and a joy to play, but sadly most people clearly didn’t agree. One of the reasons behind its poor reception was the often criticized control scheme that Rare opted for. It wasn’t bad per se, but it at times it really could be pain to use correctly. If you’ve never played the game before (you sad, sad person you) then this is how it worked…

Basically, you controlled the character as you would in any other game by using the left analog stick for your general movement. That was all fine and dandy, nothing wrong there. It was using the right analog stick to fight and attack with that made things a bit more difficult than they should have been. By the time GBTG released, most people had already grown accustomed to using that right analog stick for controlling the camera, but Rare thought that using it as your primary attack button and using the left and right bumpers to control the camera would be better. They were wrong about that. It’s not a game breaking mechanic and in no way ruins the gameplay experience, but the game would have been better if they had stuck to the tried-and-true formula of using the standard ‘a b x y’ buttons to attack and whatnot.

For those of you out there who have played the game before, did you agree with its controls? Do you think the fighting mechanic should have been reserved to the buttons as opposed to the right analog stick? Share your thoughts with us below in the comments.
